Therapy

I have reached a milestone in my shoulder recovery.

I started my physical therapy today!
I met with my PT, Trey at Athens Georgia Sports Medicine. He was very knowledgable and explained in detail, the process of therapy, what we would work on and how I can continue to progress. He also told me I can get back on the elliptical (thank god). I am actually happy to start stretching, strengthening and seeing how far this therapy will take me. I think seeing myself begin to heal will be an uplifting and hopefully motivating experience.
Today we just did a few stretches. Trey encouraged me to do them 2 times a day. Suprisingly, it felt great to stretch out a bit after three weeks of not using any of my shoulder muscles.
Onward to dinner. I was inspired by the Fitnessista and made ‘tacos’ tonight.
Romaine taco ‘shells’ were topped with Trader Joe’s Fat Free Refried Beans, salsa, cheese and ‘sour cream’ or a better option, plain greek yogurt. This meal was very satisfying and filling! Another plus was how quick and easy it came together.

How to Make Creamy Banana Oatmeal

Living out my life in a sling that holds my dominant arm hasn’t been bad…but let’s face it, it isn’t the optimal situation.
There are the ice packs, the changing of bandages, the awkward times when you look like a Cirque du Soleil artist trying to get the shirt off your back, the left handed showers that never quite make you feel as clean as a right handed one, the situated sleeping, the challenges of cooking a decent meal, the driving….oh, the driving. Everything is backwards, half-ass, I don’t care. I want to care, but I just don’t have the energy to try and pluck the grouchy eye brows I have obtained.
Through the pains of everyday awkwardness, I am in no pain. A huge blessing. I am healing properly, I think and have faced no medical emergencies thus far. A step towards the right direction, no?
The ‘no-working’ out deal I made with the Doc is slowly irritating me. Technically, I can do light cardio on the bike and work my legs. I just don’t seem motivated to do things that I HATE, the bike and legs! I have vowed today to try and clean up my diet so that the working out doesn’t seem as critical. Must stay on track for the next 5 weeks. Must. For my sanity and for my health.
This morning, I woke up under warm, snuggly covers.
Went to the kitchen, made freshly-ground creamy hazelnut coffee and made breakfast!
Almost every morning I enjoy oatmeal, its filling and delicious.
I thought I’d share how to make Whipped Banana Oats….I got this method of cooking oats from Kath!
First, you will need, 1/2 banana, 1/2 cup milk and 1/2 cup water. I also use 1/2 cup of old fashioned oats! The regular kind!
Combine these ingredients into a pot and let it sit for 5 minutes on med/med high heat. It will start to get foamy and the banana will literally start to melt and make creamy oats.
Once your oats are foamy, turn the heat way down on low and stir for about a minute. Now that the oats are a bit cooler you can stir in whatever you like! Today I used raisins.
Now pour into you favorite dish and use toppings. I always put peanut butter in my oats, but today I also added a little raspberry preserves!
This breakfast never gets old because you can add so many things to the oats to make new flavors!
Off to prepare for work! Feels good to be back into bloggie action 🙂

Shoulders and Sandwiches

Today was the day I visited Athens Orthopedic Clinic for my “reoccuring shoulder dislocation.” My shoulder has been dislocating about every month or so for three years. In my sleep mostly, at the gym, while I’m wiping my windshield…ect. Driving me NUTS and not to mention causing me a lot of PAIN! Ouch! It all started one faithful night in May 2007, when I somehow managed to dislocate my right shoulder in the car with my friends, Kelly, Kacie, Hannah and somehow…we ended up driving to our boss, Doug’s house. Crazy highschoolers. Anyways, the painful and humurous situation landed us in the emergency room where half of my family came to the rescue. All together, one of the funniest and most painful memories of my life! They popped my shoulder back in place using morphine (ahhh, good drugs) and the Stimson’s Method of relocation. Quite a night…I must say.

Well, the verdict is dun dun dun…….Surgery. 😦 No more dislocations for me!!!! Although it will be a tough recovery, it is best for me to do this while I have time in the summer.

After my appointment, I enjoyed a nice Apple and Sharp Cheddar Sandwich at Marti’s at Midday on Prince Ave. I enjoyed the quaint atmosphere and read a Food and Wine magazine circa 2000. Who the crap keeps magazines around for that long??? Good food, kinda pricey, but cute place. You should go there. And eat one of those giant cookies I didn’t eat!

Anyways, here’s to fixin’ shoulders and eatin’ sandwiches!
